Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee described working with Ledger as “one of the purest joys of my life”. “He brought to the role of Ennis more than any of us could have imagined - a thirst for life, for love, and for truth, and a vulnerability that made everyone who knew him love him,” he said. “His death is heartbreaking.” Fans have been leaving flowers and candles outside Ledger’s apartment in the SoHo district. “It’s the best performance of a villain I have seen,” said co-star Sir Michael Caine, who walked down a black carpet. The movie is dedicated to the actor, who died aged 28 following an accidental drug overdose in January. “My feeling is that he will get a nomination, I would be very surprised if he didn’t get the Oscar - he has my vote anyway,” said Sir Michael. Gary Oldman, who plays Lieutenant Jim Gordon in the film, said: “I haven’t seen a villain like this, or a bad guy like this, since Dennis Hopper played Frank Booth in Blue Velvet - this out-scares Hannibal Lecter.” Christian Bale, who returns as Bruce Wayne in the film also praised Ledger’s performance. “He’s created this anarchic, Sid Vicious-like, punk rock Joker, unlike any Joker that’s been seen before. I think it’s a real classic portrayal that will be remembered for ages”. “It is tragic he is not here, but I am here to see his talents and celebrate it and I hope everybody will”.”Co-star Aaron Eckhart added: “I’m so sad he’s not here with us and doing these interviews right now, but we are going to honour him tonight.”

Heath Ledger Dark Knight

The Dark Knight follows Batman as he sets out to destroy organised crime in Gotham City for good.

The Dark Knight is the single most anticipated movie of the summer. Batman is cool again - and not just cool, but dark, tortured and totally awesome. But what’s changed? What is Batman doing differently this time around? Christian Bale is the only Batman so far who has really been able to project a difference when he makes the transition between bruce wayne and batman. And as mentioned perviously, Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker, removed all fears that Jack Nicholson was the only actor who could play the Joker.

Maggie Gyllenhaal

Maggie Gyllenhaal stars as Gotham City’s Rachel Dawes in the new blockbuster Batman thriller “The Dark Knight.” Gyllenhaal wasn’t really looking for work when she got the call to play the role originally created by Katie Holmes in 2005’s “Batman Begins. Maggie Gyllenhaal recently revealed she almost gave up the role after a disturbing paparazzi incident. Maggie, 30, had been trying to keep her new baby out of the media’s eye, but five days after giving birth, she was tricked into the public spotlight. The paparazzi coaxed her out by lying about a fire across the street one morning, and the actress was beyond livid. “The paparazzi were just really awful to us. I mean, they called the fire department and told them there was a fire in our little, tiny building in the West Village (New York) so that we would have to come outside with a five-day-old baby,” Maggie said in an interview. After that shady encounter with the paparazzi, Maggie says she just about turned down her “The Dark Knight” role. “I was trying to navigate my way through that, when this offer came,” she said. “I thought, `It’s going to push that stuff further probably.’ But what am I going to do? I’m going to hide and not do things that are appealing to me? I’m an actress.” Maggie was openly upset about the paparazzi again when they photographed her breast feeding and spattered the images across tabloids and all over the web. Good thing for her that she didn’t give up the Dark Knight role, because she scored major points, but I still would have loved to see Katie Holmes return as Rachel Dawes.

Is the Dark Knight a success, because of Ledger’s death? Some people have said that the movie blatantly played on the symbolism of 9-11 with the poster, some say it’s a great movie, some say heath ledger played his best role. What do you think?

The one thing that really makes me wonder how accurate these records are, is the fact that ticket prices are more expensive now than when the other movies were released.
